San Antonio became the military center in 1858, when the US Army chose it's location for the Army's permanent Arsenal.

In 1878 the city deeded ninety acres to the federal government for Fort Sam Houston.

During World War I, Kelly and Brooks Fields, later Kelly Air Force Base and Brooks Air Force Base were key sites for pilot training. Then, later opening Lackland AFB and Randolph AFB.

Kelly AFB closed several years ago, but most of the military missions remain as part of Lackland AFB. Kelly USA has replaced a substantial part of the old aircraft rebuild operations. Boeing and Lockheed are major players and enjoy substantial community support.

Brooks AFB is now operating as the first City-Base test for the Armed Forces.
